Measuring compression stockings

Only perfectly fitting medical compression stockings achieve the desired therapeutic effect. For this purpose, the stockings are fitted at the medical supply store. Read our answers to the most frequently asked questions about patient-specific care with compression stockings, both off-the-shelf and custom-made.

Why is measuring for compression stockings so important?

Medical compression stockings work through pressure – for venous as well as lymphatic and lipedema conditions. This means they must fit like a second skin. Therefore, it is essential that the stocking fits precisely. Depending on body shape and condition, predefined standard sizes can be suitable, covering certain anatomical and common size proportions. However, the anatomy of some patients requires a custom-made solution that is individually manufactured.

Who is allowed to measure medical compression stockings? When is a custom-made solution necessary?

A custom-made solution is necessary in the following cases

  • Indications requiring a flat-knit medical compression stocking, which is usually the case for lymphatic and lipedema conditions,
  • Very small or very tall individuals,
  • Unusual leg shapes, for example when the ratio of ankle circumference to calf circumference is relatively large,
  • Different compression classes for each leg.

How are your legs measured before wearing medical compression stockings?

The size of medical compression stockings is always determined by trained staff at a medical supply store. Arm or leg circumferences are measured manually at precisely defined points and compared with a size chart or measurement table. It is recommended to take measurements early in the morning, when the limbs are not swollen or have been decongested as much as possible. Medical compression stockings are available not only in different sizes but also in compression classes 1, 2, 3, and 4. The difference between the compression classes lies mainly in the pressure the stockings exert on the leg and, therefore, in their area of application.

How do I determine the exact stocking size for medical compression stockings using a measurement chart?

You can find the measurement charts on the respective product pages under the section ‘Size Chart’ (for example, for mediven elegance). There you will see the different lengths and variants listed. To manufacture a thigh stocking, the leg circumferences are measured at nine defined points. To determine the correct size, these values are then compared with the size chart.

Where can the instructions and measurement sheets for medical supply retailers be found?

Retailers use the medi measuring blocks as a guide and the medi measurement sheet for accurate fitting, for example with flat-knit stockings such as mediven mondi, cosy, or 550. Both are available free of charge in the promotional material shop. You can also place your order electronically with integrated size determination in the medi e-shop.

Can your perfect compression stocking size be measured digitally?

With the digital, almost contactless and mobile process using medi vision, the legs are scanned with a 3D camera. This creates a 3D model of the legs with all measurements relevant for compression therapy.
