Not too tight, not too loose: Proper fit to keep bandages and orthoses from slipping

Bandages and orthoses only deliver their full effect when they fit properly. Discover what you can do to ensure your medical aid fits correctly.

Proper fit to keep bandages and orthoses from slipping

Fit of bandages and orthoses – what really matters?

A good fit is essential for comfort and therapeutic success: For bandages and orthoses to provide stability, relieve strain, and alleviate pain, they must fit properly. A bandage should neither slip nor sit too loosely, but it also must not press, cut into the skin, or cause chafing. Orthoses need to fit securely without unnecessarily restricting mobility. Correct sizing and proper care are key factors in achieving this.

Should I wear my bandage or orthosis directly on the skin or over clothing?

Wear your bandage directly on the skin to allow its compressive function and massage effect to work fully. An orthosis should generally be worn over tight-fitting, wrinkle-free clothing to prevent slipping. Pants that are too loose or made of non-elastic materials can create folds that negatively affect the fit. Read the instructions for use or ask your medical supply store to show you how to put on your orthosis correctly.

What should I do if a bandage or orthosis slips?

If a bandage slips, it may be due to the wrong size. If the aid has already been worn extensively over a long period, the knitted fabric may have stretched. In that case, the product should no longer be used. Please also remember to wash the bandage regularly and avoid applying creams directly before putting it on.

For orthoses, correct adjustment is crucial. If you're unsure, contact the medical supply store where you received the aid – they can check the fit and readjust the orthosis if necessary. Also, avoid using outdated products or second-hand items, as material fatigue is a common reason for poor support.

When should the fit be checked or the product replaced?

If your bandage or orthosis doesn’t fit well, causes pressure points, rubs, or slips, it should be checked and possibly replaced. Changes in your health condition—such as weight gain or loss—may also require an adjustment.

Old, worn-out, or stretched products should generally not be used, as they no longer provide reliable support and may lead to incorrect strain or posture.

For all Spinomed products, regular checks of the back brace are recommended.
