Amputation

= This is the surgical removal of a part of the body (e.g. limbs or parts of limbs, breasts etc.). The limbs affected are removed either at a joint (exarticulation) or by dividing the bone. Amputation is necessary when the part of the body concerned is so seriously diseased or injured that its maintenance and restoration is impossible or that is represents a life-threatening risk to contiguous or neighbouring areas of the body from spread of the disease.
