Going swimming with a support or an orthosis

Can you wear orthoses and supports in water, and how do you clean them afterwards?

In principle we advise against swimming in the sea or at a pool, or taking a shower while wearing supports and orthoses. On the one hand the softbraces, in particular, can absorb water. This makes them heavy, so they can slip and will no longer be in the right place. On the other hand, salt water in particular can attack the materials in the supports and orthoses and impair both the efficacy and the comfort in wear of the medical device.

If, from a therapeutic point of view, it is necessary to wear a support or orthosis in water, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with clean water afterwards and to allow it to air dry.

The exception here is the M.4 X-lock®

Since the pads on the rigid frame M.4 X-lock knee brace are made of water-repellent material, it can be worn for showering or swimming at the pool.

Important: the M.4 X-lock knee brace must be cleaned thoroughly with tap water each time after swimming to avoid soiling and residues. When drying the brace afterwards, please make sure that the orthosis doesn’t dry in the sun. You are recommended to lubricate the hinge with Teflon spray afterwards.
