Spider veins

Spider veins are fine, red or bluish capillaries that lie just under the surface of the skin. They are generally a few millimetres long and cover the thigh and lower leg like a road map.

Experts estimate that almost half the population is affected by spider veins. In most cases these are a cosmetic rather than a medical problem. Nevertheless, you should have your legs examined by a doctor because spider veins can be a sign of underlying varicose veins or the start of a venous disorder. Your doctor will then start appropriate treatment.

Groups of spider veins on the side of the thigh can also be a sign of lipoedema. If your thighs are also "too fat" and are resistant to any kind of diet, you should mention this to your doctor.

And if the spider veins prove to be a harmless change to your veins? Then you don't have to put up with them as they can be removed by sclerotherapy or laser treatment.

medi tip

Basic therapy against venous diseases are medical compression stockings.

Medical compression stockings are prescribed by the doctor if required, and the patients are measured for the correct fit by specialist medical retailers (e.g. surgical appliance dealers): the user’s leg circumferences are measured in several places so that the compression stocking matches his anatomy exactly.
