Varicose veins

Creams, ointments and tablets are on sale in pharmacies and health shops that are supposed to strengthen the veins and alleviate symptoms.

These preparations contain mainly herbal active substances from plants such as aesculus (horse-chestnut) or melilot (sweet clover).

The fact is that these products can repair neither varicose veins nor defective venous valves. They are, however, beneficial for swelling, in combination (!) with medical compression stockings. Although these preparations do not generally require a prescription, you should talk to your doctor before using them.

medi tip

Basic therapy against venous diseases are medical compression stockings.

Medical compression stockings are prescribed by the doctor if required, and the patients are measured for the correct fit by specialist medical retailers (e.g. surgical appliance dealers): the user’s leg circumferences are measured in several places so that the compression stocking matches his anatomy exactly.
