Wear the flight socks (or compression stockings) during the entire journey, i.e. even when travelling to the airport or station.

  • Don't cross your legs, as this will impede the blood flow.
  • If possible, try to do vein exercises every 30 minutes or walk around a bit. On car journeys, plan longer exercise breaks
  • Put your feet up. This is sometimes possible on bus and train journeys – take advantage of the opportunity.
  • Drink at least 0.5 litres of water, tea or fruit juice every hour.
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee during the journey, because both add to fluid loss.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing that will not constrict you.
