Due to the close links between muscles and bones, the loss of bone and muscle mass always occurs simultaneously.
Once vertebral fractures have occurred, it is essential to start treatment with medical aids (functional therapy) alongside drug therapy. Fractures cause pain and therefore lead to a further loss of muscle mass through the restriction in mobility. Modern medical aids achieve an erect spine and exercise the muscles at the same time.
Whilst, previously, patients with osteoporosis were often immobilised by a rigid corset which led to further loss of muscle mass, nowadays it is recognised that muscle activity is crucial for bone build-up, in addition to drug treatment.
To promote mobility in osteoporosis, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Helmut W. Minne, medi has developed completely new types of braces - the Spinomed and Spinomed active. These straighten up the upper body and activate the muscles of the trunk. Strong muscles support the spine, strengthen bones and can help to prevent new fractures. A clinical study showed that these braces not only increase muscle strength, but also relieve pain.
What is "Biofeedback"?
Biofeedback is a method in behavioural medicine by which we can be made aware of normally unconscious activities in the body. The pads at the back and the shoulder straps in the two osteoporosis braces, Spinomed and Spinomed active, exert gentle pressure as soon as the back starts to slump. In order to avoid the pressure, the body then uses its own muscle strength to straighten up.
