The basics: calcium and vitamin D
An adequate intake of calcium is important for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Calcium and phosphate are the two major components of bone tissue. Without calcium, bone growth is impossible.
Milk and milk products are the best sources of calcium. In the treatment of osteoporosis, calcium and vitamin D3 can also be taken as medicines in the form of dietary supplements.
The recommended daily requirements of calcium are:
| Age | mg calcium per day |
| Up to 4 years | 600 |
| 4-10 years | 700-900 |
| 10-19 years | 1100-1200 |
| Men | 1000 |
| Women | 1000 |
| Pregnancy and breast-feeding | 1200 |
The key role of vitamin D
Vitamin D3 plays an important role in the uptake of calcium into the body from the diet. Calcium can only be absorbed into the blood with the help of vitamin D.
The body can produce its own vitamin D in the skin through the action of UVB radiation. Spending time outdoors on a regular basis can help prevent osteoporosis and support its treatment.
