For vein patients

The additional benefit comes from wearing medical compression stockings during Nordic Walking:

  • Faster regeneration phase after activation.
  • Increase in performance through compression.
  • Reduction in swelling and oedema.
  • Better blood transport through the rolling over movement in the foot, heel and ankle area.
  • Tightening of connective tissue.
  • Support of vein health through activation of the calf muscles.

For lipoedema or lymphoedema patients

The additional benefit arises from the wearing of medical compression stockings during Nordic Walking:

  • The removal of lymph in the legs is activated and accelerated.
  • Arm and shoulder movements support the circulation of lymph.
  • Increase in burning off fat during aerobic training.
  • Higher mobility of the joints.

For osteoporosis patients

  • The poles provide additional security and stability when walking.
  • Posture is corrected; the upper body is straightened up.
  • Muscle work is intensified – especially in the trunk.
  • Walking supports the flow of air through the deep compartments of the lungs.
  • Chronic tension in the cervical spine and shoulders is relieved.
  • The poles lessen the load on the joints.
  • Nordic Walking can be readily used within the therapeutic scope of osteoporosis treatment.

For leg amputees

Nordic Walking is especially recommended for people with leg prostheses: the inhibitions regarding a walking movement do not need to be overcome. In addition, there are no strong impact stresses that could cause pain on the stump. The use of poles helps leg amputees keep their balance - thereby reducing the risk of falling.

Users with an optimally fitted prosthesis can easily tackle longer distances. Products with substantial advantages in use are recommended, e.g. the energy-returning Clever Bone carbon rod system or the medi Liner RELAX to protect the musculoskeletal system as well as guard against phantom pain.

In principle, Nordic Walking is possible for people with all levels of amputation, provided the prosthesis is used confidently and safely.

Positive features of Nordic Walking for leg amputees (AMPU-NOWA)

  • Improved haemodynamics throughout the whole body
  • This leads to a better vascular supply (e.g. in arterial occlusive disease)
  • Less oedema (e.g. in the residual limb)
  • Weight loss
  • More muscle power in the remaining limbs
  • Improved, more harmonious gait
  • Abandoning of learned and ingrained guarding postures
  • This leads to a reduction in incorrect weightbearing (e.g. on the hip or knee of the "healthy" side)
  • Shared outdoor sport for people with and without a disability
  • New experience: "I can do sport!" and "I'm not disabled!“
  • This increases self-confidence and quality of life
  • Improvement in subjective well-being
  • Reduction in accompanying psychosomatic disorders
