It is also your responsibility

Lymphoedema is a chronic illness. As well as the medical treatment you receive, your personal behaviour will also determine how well you can cope with it.

What does you good!

Skin care
Cleanliness is particularly important for oedema patients. Always cleanse and cream your skin with pH-neutral skin care products. Deodorants must not be used in the oedema region.

Comfortable clothing
Make sure your clothing is loose and wear comfortable, flat shoes. Do not wear a tight belt or bra.

Balanced diet
A diet is not usually necessary for lipoedema patients. Only if you are overweight should you eat less high-calorie – but nonetheless balanced - food.

Decongesting exercises
Find out about exercise programmes especially developed for lymphoedema patients. Your doctor or health insurer will be pleased to give you further information.

What you should avoid!

Stress
In situations of stress, the vessels constrict and can seize up, with the result that the oedema can worsen considerably.

Nail injuries
You must avoid injuring the nail bed when giving yourself a manicure.

Skin injuries
Abrasions, cuts, stings, scratches and bites by household pets should be avoided. Even minor injuries to the affected limbs can have serious consequences for lymphoedema patients. Erysipelas can occur.

Strong heat
Avoid saunas, sunbathing and hot baths.

Massages
Avoid kneading massages and mud packs in the oedema region. Lymphatic drainage is an exception.

Holidays
Best to avoid travelling to hot, subtropical regions and areas with high numbers of mosquitoes.
