Decongestion phase
Phase 1 – Decongestion phase
The aim is to reduce the circumference of the affected limbs. Therefore in the first stage of complex physical decongestion therapy (CPD), a whole body lymphatic drainage is carried out once to twice daily to promote the transport of fluid away from the tissue. After each treatment, a compression dressing with bandages is applied. Decongestion therapy is also supported by special exercises. In addition, at the start of therapy, skin diseases such as cracks in the skin or fungal infections of the feet are thoroughly treated, since any inflammation can also damage the lymph vessels. Meticulous hygiene and care of the skin is also important, for which only pH-neutral cleansers and creams should be used.
The first phase of complex physical decongestion therapy lasts about three to six weeks. The individual duration is dependent on the success of decongestion. Only when no further reduction can be achieved in the circumference of the affected region does the maintenance phase begin.
Maintenance phase
Phase 2 – maintenance phase
The aim of Phase 2 of the complex physical decongestion therapy (CPD) is to maintain the success and results obtained in Phase 1. In this stage of treatment, manual lymphatic drainage should be carried out twice weekly in summer and at least once weekly in winter. The compression treatment should still be supported by compression stockings, arm/handpieces and toecaps. The supplementary treatments, especially skin care and exercises, should not be omitted in this stage either.
