Lipoedema is a chronic disease. In addition to the medical treatment you receive, your personal behaviour will decide how well you cope with oedema.
Skin care
Cleanliness is particularly important for oedema patients. Always cleanse and cream your skin with neutral pH skincare products. Deodorants should not be used in the area of oedema.
Comfortable clothing
Make sure your clothing is loose and wear comfortable, flat shoes. Do not wear a tight belt or bra.
Balanced diet
Lipoedema does not consist of fat that has resulted from being overweight and therefore it cannot be overcome by slimming diets. However, weight reduction combined with sport (not forgetting to wear compression stockings) will have a positive effect. Weight gain should be avoided under all circumstances.
If you are overweight, you should in any case try to adjust your body weight to a body mass index (BMI) of between 19 and 25.
Medication
Unfortunately, medication and ointments have no effect on lipoedema.
Sport
Sport is beneficial, but only if you wear your compression stocking or bandages while you are doing it. Without compression, leg circumference would increase further as a result of exercise. The following types of sport are particularly suitable: power walking, walking, hiking, and aerobics. Aqua jogging and swimming can be done without compression stockings, as the pressure of the water provides the compression.
