The disease is first apparent on the hips; later the entire thigh is affected. If folds of fat develop on the inner sides of the knees, inflammation can occur through rubbing.

Stage 1:

"Orange peel skin" or cellulitis, skin surface finely nodular

Stage 2:

"Mattress skin", coarsely nodular with larger dimples

Stage 3:

Large, deforming folds of fat

Advanced lipoedema impedes the drainage of blood through the veins and also the drainage of lymph into the lymphatic system. Therefore lymphoedema sometimes develops as a result of lipoedema. Experts then talk of lipo-lymphoedema. It is treated in the same way as lymphoedema.
