Avoidance of one-sided stress

Golfer's and tennis elbow can usually be cured without an operation. The first approach is to re-learn movements at work or during sport to avoid one-sided stress.

The pain is relieved by physiotherapy, acupuncture and drugs (ointment dressings, cortisone).

Bandages often help prevent recurrence of the condition. Technical orthopaedic solutions such as elbow supports or elbow braces are used for prevention. Immobilisation with plaster casts is only needed in exceptional cases, since total immobilisation can lead to additional stiffness of the elbow and/or wrist.

Soft laser, ultrasound, electrotherapy and heat or ice packs can be used as supportive treatment. Additional measures include X-ray stimulation and extracorporeal shock wave therapy (a type of ultrasound treatment). In isolated cases, an operation may also be necessary.
