Compression and immobilisation

The following first-aid measures are important: cooling, compression bandaging and immobilisation. These prevent heavy bruising and shorten the recovery time.

X-rays should then be taken. This is the only way to determine which parts of the joint are injured. In minor sprains without further damage to joint structures, this first-aid treatment is usually sufficient. If ligaments or the capsule are injured, then the joint must be immobilised for at least six weeks, or repaired surgically (see ligament rupture).
