Secondary frozen shoulder - i.e. stiffness of the shoulder due to a previous disorder – is primarily treated with drugs and physiotherapy.
Excellent results have also been achieved with radiotherapy as well as with acupuncture. Surgery is seldom necessary and is restricted to cases in which shoulder joint structures have been permanently damaged.
Drug therapy involves the administration of painkillers and anti-inflammatory agents. The drugs are usually taken as tablets; more rarely they are injected directly into the joint.
Physical methods include physiotherapy, electrotherapy and the application of heat or cold compresses. Overstraining or incorrect straining of the shoulder must be avoided during treatment
