In 75 per cent of cases, no precise reasons can be given for low back pain. There is much evidence however, that not only physical, but also psychological causes play a role.
In one in four patients it is nevertheless possible to state the particular cause of the pain. Usually this is damage to a disc between two vertebrae, to wear and tear of the joints between the vertebrae or loss of bone mass (osteoporosis). A crooked back (sclosiosis) or a humped back (kyphosis) cause painful muscle spasms. Other diseases such as kidney stones or pneumonia can also cause pain in the back.
