Men may also develop a female breast shape (gynaecomastia) due to excessive fatty accumulation or increased mammary gland tissue under hereditary or hormonal influences.

This often creates a psychological problem for the affected men.

The objective of the operation is to reduce the enlarged male breast by removing fatty and glandular tissue and to restore the natural contour of the male chest cage.

Before the operation the patient is examined to determine whether the enlarged breast consists mainly of fatty or glandular tissue.

Accumulation of fatty tissue is easily removed by liposuction. This is done through small skin incisions which are barely visible afterwards in the area of the nipple and the armpit. If breast enlargement is primarily due to glandular tissue this is removed through a small incision at the lower border of the areola.

After the operation, which is usually done as outpatient surgery, a specially fitted compression vest is applied which should be worn night and day for about 4 – 6 weeks. This helps to ensure that the swelling goes down and the skin can adapt to the new body silhouette.
