Although above-average sized breasts often have hereditary causes, they can develop with hormonal changes or by gaining weight.
Apart from physical symptoms, e.g. pain in the chest, neck and back, eczema of the skin under the breast, faulty posture with muscular tension, and painful constriction by bra straps, affected women often suffer from emotional problems that may present as depressive symptoms.
The objective of the operation is to remove skin, fat and gland tissue and to “remould” the breast. At the same time, the nipple is moved upwards to give the breast a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Several different surgical techniques are available for breast reduction, all of which are performed under general anaesthesia.
As with breast augmentation, an elastic bandage is applied around the breasts after the breast reduction, and the stitches are removed about 2 weeks later. Consistently wearing a special bra that provides plenty of support for about 4 – 6 weeks ensures and stabilises a successful outcome.
