Many women feel that having small breasts impairs their feeling of self-esteem and their femininity. This is why breast augmentation is often coupled with the wish to increase their subjective well-being.
Modern operation techniques in combination with high-quality implants enable surgeons to achieve reliable and very natural looking results.
The cause for small breasts is often hereditary, where the breast does not develop fully, if at all. Pregnancy, breast-feeding or weight loss can also result in a reduction in the volume of the breast.
Breast augmentation can be carried out at any age once the body has finished growing. Breast sensitivity and the ability to breast-feed are normally retained after breast augmentation.
For breast augmentation today implants are used consisting of a silicone outer skin which can be filled with a variety of materials, e.g. silicone gel, physiological saline solution, or hydrogel. The use of a rough (textured) outer surface considerably reduces the risk of hardening of the capsule. Silicone gel implants are considered to be the best option. They most closely resemble the feel of the natural breast, and are available in almost any size and shape (round and drop-shaped).
None of the many international scientific studies conducted to date have shown any connection between silicone gel implants and the onset of cancer, rheumatism or autoimmune diseases.
Small skin incisions are needed to insert the implant. Depending on the technique used, these are made in the armpit, in the fold of the breast, or at the edge of the areola. When the wound heals normally the scars are virtually invisible. The cavity needed to contain the implant lies either between the mammary gland and the chest muscle or behind the chest muscle.
An elastic bandage is applied around the breasts straight after the operation. The stitches are removed about 10 days after the procedure. A special bra that provides plenty of support should be worn day and night for about four weeks after the operation to stabilise the results, and all strenuous activities should be avoided.
